Jumble of doodles of Velcory and @yab0iblue’s Huckleberry,
Hi! I read a old post on here that mentioned Borzoi as service dogs, and that you had information on how they are like, and any breeders who work with SD. Is that information still around?
Oh man, that is something I look back on and yikes @ my newbie self. I wish I could find that post and delete it. 10 years and a lot of experience later, I don’t recommend the breed for service dog work, for a number of reasons. It’s not impossible and there have been some successful teams, but a lot has to go wrong in terms of breed type. That is to say, many of the traits breeders are selecting for could easily wash a service dog prospect.
I don’t know any borzoi breeders selecting for service dogs but sometimes there are oddballs who are duds at being sighthounds. That’s potentially a long waiting game.
Instead, I would suggest looking into silken windhounds (with very careful breeder selection there too). Silkens trend more biddable, handler focused, and there’s a better chance of finding one with low/no prey drive, though breeders are selecting for that more.
